Remember, L is for lock-out. After doing this, the auto-stop never kicked in until I turned off the car. So if you want to disable it, go to "L" mode - don't forget to click up to 9 so you can still use all 9 gears. I drive many different cars and none that I know of, have a permanent off function for the stop start. Every time you turn the ignition on, the button needs pressing. It could be worse some cars need to be switched off by going through a touch screen menu. Perhaps someone knows of a method of fooling the car. In the end you just get used to it.

Turn off the Auto Stop/Start by pressing the bottom button on the far left of the dash with the "A" (below the button with the "P", the "P" is to turn off the parking assist system) and yes, you must turn it off every time the car is started.
BMW has to implement the system to meet CAFE standards. It's either the little Auto Start/Stop button, or less horsepower. I choose the little button. All you have to do is when you start the car, move your finger down about 5mm and press the Start/Stop button as well to disable the system. Geeez, that sounds like a lot of extra work. If you are in traffic where each car moves just a few meters the system constantly alternates stop-go-start and it cycles with AC on/off. The noise is very loud also when starter engages. So, we just always remember to disable it at 1st start. Have to press a button on shift panel anyway so do it at the same time as pressing D/S. No, it's not. For 2022 (and 2023) they added a button on the center console to disable the Start/Stop, from the factory. You just have to press it every time you start the car, to disable it.
